Art & Environment Workshop: “Sacred Time: Church Art & Environment During The Liturgical Year”:
A workshop for Ministers of Art & Environment will be offered Aug. 29, 2009 in St. James, MO. The presenter will be Mark Sievers, a member of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission of the Jefferson City diocese and an art educator for over 32 years. This workshop, entitled “Sacred Time: Church Art & Environment During The Liturgical Year” is sponsored by the Diocesan Liturgical Commission. The workshop will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10:00am-2:00pm at Immaculate Conception Parish, St. James, in the parish hall. The cost of the workshop is $10.00, which includes lunch and handouts. The fee can be paid at the workshop. Please RSVP by Aug. 24, for attendance and lunch by calling Mark Sievers at (573)265-8990 or e-mailing: msievers@stjschools.org.
The workshop will be especially helpful to mid and small sized parishes, but even big parishes with large art & environment budgets will glean much helpful information and creative ideas. No matter if the art & environment team is large or consists of only one person, everyone who attends this workshop will take from it theological insight, new ideas and practical help and knowledge to make each Feast and Liturgical Season celebrated in their parish richly visual and spiritually satisfying.
Topics for the workshop include:
*Prayer is essential
*The theology and history of the Feasts and Seasons
*Liturgical colors, statues and altar coverings
*Choosing, using and caring for materials
*Practical advice for the Art & Environment team
*Ribbons, banners and flowers
*Where to find great deals
*Mary Gardens and the outdoor space
*Slide presentation of church environments thru the liturgical year
Mr. Sievers and his Art & Environment Team cohorts are strong believers that, along with well prepared, reverently celebrated liturgical ceremonies, beautiful sacred music and good catechesis- an environment that evokes the meaning of a particular feast or season by using appropriate signs and symbols, can contribute greatly in lifting our minds and hearts to God. With the Church’s rich inheritance of signs and symbols there is no reason for the physical settings of a church’s liturgies to be visually bland and monotonous.
For fun and sharing, everyone is invited to bring a story, photo, or drawing of a liturgical environment they’ve found inspiring; or conversely, a horror.
As Jesus said to two of his disciples at the beginning of his ministry, “Come, and you will see.” (Jn. 1:39)
